Which wool yarn should I choose for dyeing?
We stock organic Merino and British Blue faced Leicester wool in double knit, Aran and sock weights, some of them Superwash. All our yarns are of excellent quality and they are all suitable for using with natural dyes. The yarns are all worsted spun, which makes them smooth and durable and gives great stitch definition. Remember that you need to mordant your wool before dyeing (unless you are dyeing with indigo or woad, which don’t need mordanting). It is wise to add extra ties before mordanting, to prevent the yarns getting tangled.
- I want Organic wool – have a look at our Organic Merino, which is available in both DK and in Aran.
- I want the brightest possible colour – Superwash wool has been treated to abrade the scales of the wool, this makes the wool less likely to felt, and also helps the dye to penetrate better, giving the best possible colour. You have a choice of Superwash BFL DK and Superwash sock wool.
- I want a hard-wearing sock wool – our Superwash blend of 75% Merino and 25% nylon makes a superb sock wool
- I want to make felted knits – Aran weight wool is ideal for felted knits. We have Organic merino in Aran. Coming soon, we will have British BFL Aran in stock.
- I want British wool – you can buy any of the yarns made from Blue-faced Leicester (BFL) wool. We have BFL Double Knitting (DK) and Superwash BFL DK back in stock, and will soon have BFL Aran.
- I want wool for spinning - click on this link for silk and wool tops for spinning.
Mordanting your wool Remember that you need to mordant your wool before dyeing (unless you are dyeing with indigo or woad, which don’t need mordanting). It is wise to add extra ties before mordanting, to prevent the yarns getting tangled.
We sell pre-mordanted wool for dyers who are short of time to do their own mordanting, and for beginners who may find mordanting a bit daunting (enquire for details).
